The philosophy behind the development of the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL®) was the recognition that organizations are becoming increasingly dependent on IT to meet their business needs. Quantity alone, however, is not the answer and demand for high quality IT services has steadily increased. ITIL satisfies this need by providing a foundation on which to build.

As the most widely accepted approach to IT Service Management globally, ITIL provides a complete set of best practices drawn internationally from both the public and private sectors. Supported by accredited training organizations, consulting organizations, and a comprehensive qualification scheme, great care has been taken to ensure consistency. During the latest rewrite, the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) worked closely with the British Standards Institute (BSI) and the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) to ensure revisions maintained the same logical structure found in other key documents such as BIP0005, BIP0015, BS15000-1, and BS15000-2.

Consisting of a series of books, ITIL offers guidance on the provisioning of quality IT services, including the accommodation and environmental facilities needed to support the infrastructure. Plexent has expanded the practicality of ITIL through its product, itDNA®. As depicted below, itDNA provides additional depth by approaching the process groups holistically. Not pictured are the Elements within each Service Management Discipline that provide the detail needed to apply ITIL to your unique situation.

itDNA® is based on the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL®), an evolving standard for IT Service Delivery and Support. ITIL supports a process oriented model that translates an organization's business needs into groups of activities that provide the necessary IT services and ensure customer access to those services. itDNA extends ITIL's applicability to distributed environments and provides additional detail within the 12 Disciplines through inclusion of subordinate Elements. By taking advantage of the increased specificity afforded by Elements, organizations can more precisely focus resources on the exact processes needed to realize improvement.
